In 2021, Coalition S commissioned a large scale study on diamond OA Journals. The results of the study are divided into two parts: findings and recommendations. The study surveyed 1,619 journals. It also collected 7,019 free text submissions, organised three focus groups with 11 journals and 10 interviews with hosting platforms.
Findings indicated that OA journals are on the road to full compliance with Plan S.  The study also found that diamond OA journals comprised a mix of scientific strengths and operational challenges. Additionally, most diamond OA Journals depend on volunteers, universities or governments.
Recommendations emanating from the study include streamlining technical support for OA diamond journals, ensuring compliance with Plan S and prioritising journal sustainability. Coalition S plans to organise an international workshop and symposium on OA diamond Publishing within 6 months; to set up an OA diamond funding strategy within 1 year and to build an OA diamond publishing Capacity Centre within 2 months.
